Unsure of what frame to choose? Need guidance on what is likely to work for you? Here is our guide.
There are 3 ingredients for successfully choosing the right frame:-
- Choosing the right frame to suit your face shape and size.
- Choosing the right colour to complement your hair, eyes and skin tone
- Your personality
1. Choosing the right frame to suit your face shape
There are three things to consider
- The frame shape should contrast with the face shape.
- The frame size should be in scale with the face size.
- Eyewear should repeat your personal best feature (such as a blue frame to match blue eyes).
Face Shapes:
Although we are a combination of shapes and angles we will generally fit into one of the following 7 basic face shapes:-
Round |
A round face is soft and has no angles. The width and length are in the same proportions. To make the face appear thinner and longer, try angular narrow eyeglass frames to lengthen the face, a clear bridge widens the eyes. Choose frames that are wider than they are deep, such as a rectangular shape. |
| Oval |
| This shape is considered to be the ideal shape because of its balanced proportions. Lucky you! This is the easiest shape as most frame styles suit this face shape. Just try and keep the size of the frame in proportion to your face ie the frame should be as wide (or slightly wider) than the broadest part of your face. |
Oblong |
| Longer than it is wide with a long straight cheek line and sometimes a long nose. To make the face appear shorter and more balanced, try frames that have a top-to-bottom depth, decorative or contrasting temples that add width to the face or a low bridge to shorten the nose. |
| Base Down Triangular/ Pear |
| The triangular face has a narrow forehead that widens at the cheek and chin areas. Emphasize the narrow upper third of the face by adding width at the top, try frames that are heavily accented with colour and detailing on the top half or cat-eye shapes. |
Heart Shaped / Base Up Triangle |
| This shape is denoted by a very wide top third and small bottom third. Choose an a frame which is an upside down version of your face, wider at the bottom. Select very light colours and materials, and rimless frame styles. |
| Diamond |
| Diamond-shaped faces are narrow at the eye line and jawline, and cheekbones are often high and dramatic. You are a rare breed! Highlight the eyes and bring out the cheekbones, try frames that have detailing or distinctive brow lines, or try rimless frames or oval and cat-eye shapes. Semi-rimless will be flattering. |
Square |
| A square face is angular with a strong jaw line and a broad forehead, plus the width and length are in the same proportions. To make the square face look longer and soften the angles, try narrow frame styles, frames that have more width than depth and narrow ovals. |
In Addition:- |
Long and Narrow
- Don't select glasses that are wider than your face it will simply emphasize the narrowness of your face. Semi- rimless are idea as they don't clutter up the face
Small Delicate Faces
- Again you don't wish to clutter up the face. Look at rimless and semi-rimless or look for petite frames.
2. Choosing the right colour
Everyone either has a warm (yellow-based) or cool (blue-based) skin tone and you look best in your own colour base.
Look at your
- Skin tone
- Eye colour
- Hair colour
Skin Skin tone or complexion, falls into one of two colour bases — blue (cool) or yellow (warm). A cool complexion has blue or pink undertones, and a warm complexion has a "peaches and cream" or yellow cast. Olive skin is considered cool because it is a mixture of blue and yellow.
Eyes Eye colours are secondary element in determining colouring because of the wide range of eye colours. For example, blue eyes can range from a cool almost-violet to a pale blue-grey, which is warm. Brown eyes can vary from a light amber shade (warm) through a medium-brown to a cool almost-black.
Hair Hair colour is also considered warm or cool. Strawberry blond, platinum, blue-black, white, salt-and-pepper and deep brown are cool. Warm includes golden blond, flat black, brown-gold, red and brown-grey.
Eyeglass Frame Colours
Once you have determined if you are "warm" or "cool," then you can find the eyeglass frame colours that will suit you the best.
For warm colouring: bronze, gold, copper, peach, orange, coral, off-white, fire-engine red, warm blue and blond tortoise.
For cool colouring: the best eyeglass frame hues are black, silver, gunmetal, plum, burgundy, pink, blue and darker tortoise.
3. Your Personality
Are you introvert or extrovert? Do you want to make an impact with your glasses or do you prefer to melt into the crowd?
Your spectacles say as much about you as your personality. If you like to turn heads then be bold and daring. Strong shapes and colours can have as much impact as a power suit. Semi-rimless are finer and can offer a sophisticated and refined look. Rimless make little impact because of their minimalist design and are flattering to most face shapes.
Remember, glasses should be seen as an accessory just like shoes, ties and handbags – you can match them with your outfit and change your look just by wearing a different pair. |
